Indira Awas Yojana
With the aim to provide housing facilities to the poor people in India, the Government had launched a program of social welfare named Indira Awaas Yojana to provide all the poor with housing in India. The program has different schemes for the people below poverty line in rural areas as well as in the urban areas. This is the largest program of flagship launched by the Development Ministry of rural areas, in order to construct the set of houses for the population belonging to BPL (below poverty line) category in all the villages.For construction of the houses, plain areas got financial assistance of worth Rs. 70, 000 and hill areas got financial assistance worth Rs. 75, 000 according to this scheme. The allotment of house is for the joint account of wife and husband or solely on name of woman.Under this scheme, house construction is only beneficial to rural people and it is completely banned for all the contractors to engage in this scheme. Along with every IAY house, an additional financial help is also provided under the Campaign of Total Sanitation and Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana by Rajiv Gandhi for smokeless chullah and sanitary latrine. Since 1985, this scheme has been operating and provides financial assistance to build houses for people of rural areas by themselves.
